Hello Starr and I love my Singer 301! I use the slant embroidery foot that was previously made by Singer, and they do have newer reproductions available. It is a hard plastic and does a nice free motion. I just wrote a comparison of how to choose your embroidery and free motion foot on my blogsite. A pic of that Singer slant is there. Go to:

If I can help further just send me an email! Love to hear from others what slant foot they like to use.

I have a foot with the # 25533 on it, which in one place called it a hemmer. To me it looks more like the Singer quilting or possibly gathering foot only the "space guide" is attached on a swivel type arrangement on top of the foot. Can you tell me what this might be used for and how? I just purchased your new book and was wondering if it could be a different gathering foot w/the quilting guide attached - similar to the one pictured on p. 80. The only problem is this one has the quilting guide attached "permanently" on top of the foot which doesn't allow the holder to fit under the side screw. This all sounds confusing but would appreciate any insight you might have. Love your book so far - I've just started trying to learn to use the attachments I have and those I might find in the future.

Hello and thanks for the question. The Singer foot #25533 is the foot hemmer, yet if you have a foot that looks like that on page 80 - that gets more confusing as that one is a gathering foot. Now, adding in the space guide you are referring to, that places it like the quilting foot. It does sound like a fairly confused attachment. Is it a Singer? At times, the numbers can be hard to determine due to the stamping. I would certainly be happy to look at a photo of the foot, which will give a much better determination. If you wish to, send it to me at charlene@thesewbox.com and I will be happy to help.

I am glad you are enjoying the book, and keep practicing. If you saw my sewing trash can some days - we all learn at the beginning.
